Parents who are new to Luxembourg are often surprised to learn that children do not all follow the same type of secondary education. Instead, pupils are guided towards different pathways based on their academic progress, interests and future ambitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If you’ve spoken to people who have lived in Luxembourg for many years, you may also hear terms such as Technique<\/em> or Modulaire<\/em>. These were the names used under the previous system and can still cause confusion today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This guide explains the current system and how it has evolved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Today, Luxembourg has two main forms of secondary education:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Both are respected secondary education pathways that lead to recognised qualifications, but they have different aims and offer different routes into higher education and employment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Classique pathway places a strong emphasis on academic subjects and prepares students primarily for university study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Students follow a broad curriculum with a strong focus on languages, mathematics, sciences and humanities. They also study subjects that are less common in many other school systems, such as Latin (for some pupils) and philosophy in the later years. As students progress through secondary school, they choose specialised sections reflecting their interests, including science, economics, languages, arts or mathematics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Teaching places considerable emphasis on theoretical understanding, critical thinking and academic writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The G\u00e9n\u00e9rale pathway offers a much broader variety of programmes and greater flexibility, while going less in depth with mathematics and languages. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Alongside traditional academic subjects, students can choose programmes with a more practical or applied focus. Depending on the school and specialisation, subjects may include engineering, computer science, business, healthcare, hospitality, cooking, design or other vocational disciplines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The G\u00e9n\u00e9rale pathway has evolved considerably over the past decade and now offers many routes to higher education, technical professions and skilled careers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Both pathways are multilingual, but they place different emphasis on the languages of instruction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In the Classique pathway, many academic subjects continue to be taught in German during the early years before an increasing number of subjects transition to French. Students are expected to develop a high level of proficiency in both languages alongside English and, in many cases, additional languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The G\u00e9n\u00e9rale pathway generally provides greater flexibility. Some programmes continue to use more German, while others make greater use of French depending on the specialisation. The linguistic demands remain high, but the balance between German and French is often adapted to the needs of the programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This flexibility is one reason why some students who find the language requirements of the Classique pathway challenging thrive in G\u00e9n\u00e9rale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Yes. Although students are initially guided towards the pathway that best matches their current strengths, the decision is not necessarily permanent<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Many students begin in G\u00e9n\u00e9rale because they need more time to develop the high level of German and French required for the Classique pathway. As their language skills improve and they demonstrate strong academic performance, it is possible to transfer to Classique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Likewise, some students begin in Classique but later decide that the G\u00e9n\u00e9rale pathway is a better fit for their learning style or career ambitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Transfers are considered on an individual basis and depend on factors such as academic results, language proficiency and the recommendation of the school. Moving between pathways is generally easier in the earlier years of secondary education, before the curricula become highly specialised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For many internationally mobile families, this flexibility is reassuring. A child who is still catching up linguistically at the age of 12 is not prevented from pursuing a more academic pathway later if they work hard and continue to make strong progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n No. One point that often surprises parents is that not every secondary school (lyc\u00e9e) offers both the Classique and G\u00e9n\u00e9rale pathways. It is therefore worth noting that transferring between pathways is often easier in a lyc\u00e9e that offers both streams. In these schools, a student may be able to move from one pathway to the other while remaining at the same lyc\u00e9e. If a lyc\u00e9e offers only one pathway, a transfer may also involve changing schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If you’ve lived in Luxembourg for some time, or spoken to older residents, you may still hear the terms Technique and Modulaire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Until 2017, today’s G\u00e9n\u00e9rale (ESG) was known as Enseignement secondaire technique (EST), usually shortened to Technique. The name was changed because it no longer reflected the wide variety of academic, technical and vocational programmes offered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The term Modulaire referred to a vocational pathway within the old Technique system. Although vocational education still exists today, it has been reorganised within the modern ESG framework, and the term is no longer used officially. Many Luxembourgers, however, still use both “Technique” and “Modulaire” in everyday conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is probably the most common question parents ask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The short answer is no<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The two systems are designed for different students and different career goals.
